Juniors Successful at Cattle Camp
January 19, 2021With the shortage of cattle events due to COVI-19, two ALCA Junior members jumped at the chance to attend a Cattle Camp. Recently Riley Jensen and Tom Smith attended the Brangus Cattle camp in Biloela, Queensland, along with 73 participants aged from 6 to 21 years. They camped together at the showgrounds, were allocated cattle and learned about the preparation and showing of cattle, judging and even practised AI on Breeding Betsy, an artificial cow! In addition, Tom’s mum, Jane, showed them bull semen under the microscope and talked to the group about motility and morphology.
The camp culminated in several competitions. Tom won the Under 11’s Prime Cattle Judging, his first time ever judging. An awesome effort! And Riley won the 13 and under Paraders, the Herdsman Award(for preparation and presentation of cattle, cleanliness of his area and willingness to assist others) and the Overall Champion for his age group. Exceptionally well done!
With these two in our Junior ranks, the future looks very bright indeed! Congratulations Riley and Tom!
